We spent most of the day in Hanalei, Kayaking up, and then back down the river. Turned out to be a good day to do it, as it sprinkled off and on, making it not a great beach day. That said, it was warm and sometimes sunny as well, and we were actually glad not to have had full sun all of the time. We got enough sun with 4 hours in the kayak as it was. It was pretty fascinating. First we started out and this is how it looked:
and, this is how Neal looked:
We saw some old and new friends along the way:
Nene ( Hawaian Goose):
Alien (introduced) Duck -possibley hybrid species:
A really beautiful turtle who posed for quite some time for us:
and then a immature ( baby) cattle egret
Scenery was beatiful- beautiful flowers on the sides of the river - lots of river- interesting trees.

Got back to Hanalei about 1:30 and decided had done enough Kayaking, and with it actually raining, going on out to the bay and swimming was less inviting. So we had a lunch from our food stash- fresh pineapple, yogurt ( D only), granola--- and then treated ourselves to Pineapple/banana smoothies at Banana Joe's - Yummy.
Then we revisited the Kilauea Lighthouse where we saw the frigatebirds, boobys, etc yesterday- to recheck them out. Am happy to report that they are still there-- and  we saw a white tailed tropic  bird ( not to be confused with the red tailed tropicbird, who we saw yesterday in same area) - so that was a special treat!.
So, then we drove down to Waimea where we are now staying for the next 3 days. Took about 2 hours to get here- quite a lot of traffic going through the resort areas on the East/South Shore and going around Lihu'e.
We are happily housed in a lovely B&B on the edge of an old plantation --way, way back from the road. Really beautiful view from our patio-- photo perhaps tomorrow. We hope to go up the Waimea Canyon tomorrow and do some hiking, and then maybe add a swim in later.
So, off to bed for now - Love and cheers to all. Deb ( and Neal)

  1. It sounds like you are making the most of your stay. Maybe when we are there in June I'll try kayaking again -- this time on the river. Sea kayaking was a little too exciting for me.

No Bubba Burger in Hanalei? :) I hope you did try shave ice with some fruity flavor.

I'm excited to hear about your stay in the south, since we never made it to the canyon.
